By: D exiang Li Thesis Title: Q uantification o f chlorine im purities in w ater im m iscible ionic liquids using ICP-M S D ate o f Subm ission: A ug 17, 2006 A m ethodology for quantification o f chloride in w ater im m iscible ionic liquids has been developed using ICP-M S w ith organic accessory. Solvent m ixtures using various ratios o f organic solvent rela tive to w ater w ere studied for their ability to dissolve w ater im m iscible ionic liquids and w ere used to exam ine the effect on detection lim its. Two processes to reduce the content o f chlorine in w ater im m iscible ionic liquids w ere com pared as w as the effect o f different synthetic routes for the same ionic liquid. The effect o f instrum ental param eters such as auxiliary gas, aspiration rate o f sam ple, reflected pow er and forward pow er on system stability and signal enhancem ent w ere also exam ined. The quantitative relationship betw een the w ater content and halide content as w ell as other experim ental issues w ill be discussed. Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner.
